Each year, we survey Shrevewood staff to compile a directory of Staff Favorite Things. This resource is designed to help families who wish to support a teacher's classroom or select a meaningful gift.

Please note: You must be logged in to view the lists. Participation is voluntary. If a staff member is missing from the list, we encourage you to ask them directly about their preferences.

Community Resources

Support for Furloughed Federal Workers

  • New Eligibility for Free and Reduced-Price Meals
    • Families can apply for free and reduced-price meal benefits anytime during the school year. If a family’s income changes at any point, they may become newly eligible according to federal income guidelines and can apply immediately. This includes income interruptions caused by furloughs, layoffs, or job losses. Once approved, benefits remain valid for the rest of the school year and for up to 30 school days into the following school year, even if the family’s income changes again. For more information, click here.
  • Free Mental Health Sessions
    • Free, virtual mental health sessions are available through FCPS's partnership with Hazel Health. This is a great way for students to access care quickly and easily from home, providing support for stress, anxiety, worry, and other concerns that might be heightened during the shutdown. For more information, click here.
  • Fairfax County Government Assistance
    • The Fairfax County Government and various local organizations are stepping up to offer a range of assistance, including food, financial, and housing resources. Any families who are experiencing financial distress, due to the shutdown or for any reason can visit the Fairfax County Human Services Resource Guide (HSRG) website. For more information, click here.
  • Fairfax Connector's TRIP
    • Fairfax Connector’s Transit Ridership Incentive Program (TRIP) also provides 50% off fares for low-income residents ages 18 to 65. For more information, click here.
  • Fairfax County Offerings
    • Fairfax County residents can take advantage of many of the free offerings the county provides to residents and students. Our incredible public libraries have a wide-selection of books and other activities that families can check out. All FCPS students also have a Library Equity Access Pass through Fairfax County Public Libraries, which allows them to check-out up to 3 items for 6 weeks. And Fairfax County’s many parks and recreation areas are open and free to residents as well.
  • Earn Extra Income: Become a Substitute Teacher
    • Fairfax County Public Schools is actively recruiting substitute teachers — and that includes you! For those impacted by the federal government shutdown, this is a great opportunity to put your skills to work, earn extra income, and make a meaningful difference for students who need caring adults in the classroom. You can start quickly, take advantage of flexible scheduling, and provide essential support to our schools. For more information, click here.
  • Fairfax County’s Federal Workforce Resource Hub
    • Providence Supervisor Dalia Palchik is encouraging those impacted by the shutdown to visit Fairfax County’s Federal Workforce Resource Hub — a central information portal designed to assist federal employees and contractors living in the county who may be impacted by changes, interruptions, or reductions in federal operations. It offers resources and guidance in areas such as employment and job training, health insurance options, financial assistance (for rent, utilities, food, etc.), mental health support, veteran/military resources, and programs to help displaced federal workers transition into new careers. For more information, click here.

Food Support

  • Food for Others This is one of the largest food pantries in Northern Virginia. They provide emergency food assistance to families referred by social workers, school liaisons, and Coordinated Services Planning (CSP).
    • Website: foodforothers.org
    • How to Get Help:
      1. USDA: The USDA Program is 1x a month. Families qualify based on income. To find out if you qualify, the first time you visit you will be asked to fill out of short application. You do not need to schedule an appointment to receive food.
      2.  Emergency Referral: To receive food through the emergency referral program, you need a referral from a social worker or community health worker. This program is different from USDA as it provides some additional food. You can find a social worker by contacting Coordinated Services at 703-222-0880.
      3. Neighborhood Sites: You can receive food at one of FFO's neighborhood sites. Neighborhood sites provide supplementary food. You don’t need to provide any information (just the number of people in your family) to pick up neighborhood site food. We recommend coming to a neighborhood site 10 minutes early.
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) SNAP provides benefits (formerly "food stamps") to eligible low-income individuals and families to purchase food.
  • WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) A supplemental nutrition program for pregnant women, new mothers, and young children.

Health & Wellness

  • Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) The main Fairfax County resource for mental health, substance use, and developmental disability services for all ages.

    • Call or Text: 988 (24/7, free, confidential)
  • Fairfax County Health Department Provides information on clinics, immunizations, and other public health services.

Housing & Utility Support

  • Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) This is the main entry point for all emergency housing and utility assistance. They can connect you with eviction prevention services and programs to help pay past-due rent or utility bills.
